Abstract: Metal corrosion contributes to significant losses in various aspects and is often intensified by the use of toxic chemicals. Therefore, this study aims to examine the use of cempedak (Artocarpus integer) peel extract as a new alternative for corrosion inhibition of AISI 1020 carbon steel. The material is considered more economical, effective, less hazardous, and environmentally friendly. Weight loss (WL) and potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) techniques were applied, yielding the best efficiency at increasing extract concentrations of 0, 200, 400, 600, 800, and 1000 mg/L in a corrosive NaCl 3.5% solution. The best inhibition was observed with the highest efficiencies of 90.60% (WL) and 80.06% (PDP) at an extract concentration of 1000 mg/L. Furthermore, the morphology of carbon steel before and after protection was investigated using scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive x-ray (SEM-EDS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed a lower degradation rate compared to the unprotected condition, further confirming the inhibitor effectiveness. In conclusion, A. integer peel extract can be used as a superior inhibitor for environmentally friendly corrosion control.
