Adhesion promoters for waterborne paints and coatings

Numerous studies have shown that the main factor affecting adhesion is the chemical interaction between the metal and the protective coating. A strong chemical bond of the polymer coating with the metal is mainly formed through donor-acceptor and covalent bonds. In this paper, the mechanisms of formation of covalent bonds of low-carbon steel with acrylic paints based on a styrene-acrylic dispersion are considered. Water-soluble dispersions have an advantage over organic binders because well-known corrosion inhibitors can be used as adhesion promoters. Organosilanes are the most common adhesion promoters for paint and varnish materials. However, in water-soluble paints, silanols can condense and become inactive during storage. In this regard, the replacement of organosilanes with affordable and effective corrosion inhibitors can significantly expand the list of promoters for water-soluble paints. The mechanism of covalent bond formation between adhesion promoters and the surface of low-carbon steel has been studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The main factors influencing the effectiveness of adhesion promoters based on carboxylic and phosphonic acids have been established. The barrier properties of alkyd enamel PF-115 with a conversion coating based on acrylic lacquers with additives of adhesion promoters have been studied using electrochemical methods. Corrosion tests in aqueous NaCl solutions have shown the high protective properties of these coatings.
