Abstract: Literature data on the processes of chemical transformation of corrosion inhibitors (CIs) in the aggressive environment/metal system are summarized. In an aggressive environment/metal system, CIs can undergo the following chemical transformations: protonation; chemical transformations that determine the protective effect of the compound; chemical degradation (hydrolysis, reduction, polymerization in bulk the corrosive environment); chemical transformations leading to the formation of protective polymer films on the metal surface. The processes of degradation of chemical compounds in a corrosive environment can determine their low effectiveness in protecting metals. The destruction of CI leads to a decrease in its content in an aggressive environment. Degradation processes involving chemical compounds occur over time and intensify with increasing temperature, which often manifests itself in the loss of their protective effect during prolonged operation or heating of the system. From a practical point of view, the most important way of chemical transformation of CIs in aggressive environments is their formation of protective films on the surface of metals, providing the most effective protection. Their formation on a metal surface is possible as a result of the polymerization of unsaturated organic compounds or the polycondensation of organic silicon compounds. An alternative way to obtain a protective layer on the metal is the formation of a polymer complex compound from CI molecules and metal cations present in an aggressive environment as a result of metal destruction. The bibliography includes 213 references.
