Abstract: This work presents the development of a process for applying a protective adhesive zirconium-containing coating to the surface of electrolytically tinned tinplate used in the can production. The conceptual possibility of preparing high-quality thin passive coatings from an electrolyte based on hexafluorozirconic acid has been demonstrated. Parameters of the process for depositing these coatings have been studied, and the physicochemical and mechanical properties of the coatings that may be an alternative to the toxic chromating process were examined. The protective characteristics of electrolytically tinned passivated tinplate and adhesion are fairly high and meet consumer requirements for this material. In implementing the new technology on existing coating units, the determined electrolysis parameters integrate well into the production cycle and do not require significant capital investment.
