Oleochemicals as green corrosion inhibitors: A review

Abstract: Oleochemicals are non-toxic organic molecules that can act as green corrosion inhibitors. Plant-based extracts have the potential to replace commercial inhibitors as green corrosion inhibitors. Oleochemicals can be generated from natural fats and oils found in plants and animals. Green corrosion inhibitors can be derived from natural oils and lipids. When combined into nanocomposites, Chitosan is a non-toxic biopolymer used as a green corrosion inhibitor in industrial steel cooling systems. Biopolymers may be cheaper than synthetic inhibitors, depending on the source and manner of synthesis. Polysaccharides, which are plant-derived biopolymers, are a type of green corrosion inhibitor that is both practical and less expensive than petrochemical polymer coating materials. In conclusion, oleochemicals are a better option for corrosion prevention because of their renewability, convenience of use, environmental benefits, and equivalent or greater efficiency compared to petroleum-based alternatives. The use of oleochemicals should be encouraged in businesses that require corrosion control. They provide a long-term and responsible solution for metal protection. Further research and development into oleochemical corrosion inhibitors is needed to improve their effectiveness and investigate applications under various conditions and on various metals.
