Inhibitory protection of metals in acid solutions by pharmaceuticals. A critical review

Abstract: Literature data on the corrosion protection of steel, copper, zinc, and aluminum in mineral acid solutions by additives of pharmaceuticals are summarized and analyzed. The following groups of substances are studied as corrosion inhibitors in acid media: central nervous system agents, drugs acting primarily on peripheral neurotransmitter processes, drugs acting primarily in the area of sensory (afferent) nerve endings, drugs acting on the cardiovascular system, drugs that enhance the excretory function of kidneys, drugs regulating metabolic processes, and drugs for the treatment and prevention of infectious diseases. Such substances show the maximum protective effect in cold acid solutions, while the protective effects decrease with an increase in temperature. It is possible to expand the temperature range of inhibitory action of drugs by using them as components of mixed corrosion inhibitors. This review summarizes the experimental data on the protection of metals by pharmaceuticals and reveals the actual directions of research of drugs in this field that would allow one to find substances suitable for the creation of industrial corrosion inhibitors. Environmental risks associated with the use of pharmaceuticals as corrosion inhibitors are noted. The bibliography includes 157 references.
