Abstract: The goal of the present work is to develop a technological process for applying anticorrosive sol-gel coatings based on zirconium dioxide and cerium dioxide onto the surface of AA5056 aluminum alloy as a replacement for toxic chromating processes. In this work, cerium dioxide and zirconium dioxide sols were synthesized and optimized, and the particle sizes and stability of the resulting sols were studied. The physicochemical properties of the coatings formed from the initial sols, as alternatives to chromate coatings, were studied. It was found that the thicknesses of ZrO2 and CeO2 coatings obtained by the dip-coating method are approximately 120 and 200 nm, respectively, which are significantly smaller than those of chromate layers (500–1000 nm). The developed zirconium-containing sol-gel coatings was shown to be comparable in protective performance to chromate coatings. It was also found that the wear resistance of Zr- and Ce-containing coatings obtained by the dip-coating method is comparable to that of chromate coatings.
